Fragments of a Story: Strange Chambers Part 1

Our parents died. They had a great collection of swords, that we needed to sell to buy food after their death. Soon after we sold our last sword, there was nothing left to train with or to live off of, prices were pretty high and we ended up running out of money, forcing us to live on the streets quite fast.

My brother and I were taken in by a stranger, living in a big mansion, not long after we lost our home. He approached us and offered us a place to stay while we were begging for food on the streets. We didn’t know why this stranger would pick up two orphan children and offer them a place to stay, but we didn’t think twice to accept his offer and went with him.

The first thing I noticed about the mansion were its long dark corridors and the many portraits on the walls. It felt as if the people on the walls were watching every move we made, my brother didn’t like the watching walls and felt uncomfortable every time he walked through the house, so he didn’t leave his room much.
There was a pair of golden daggers hanging on the wall in one of the corridors, that I discovered on one of my strolls through the mansion and soon began to secretly train with during the night. Our parents had begun to train us from a very young age and I was determined to keep training, to be prepared as they had always said. I never knew what they were talking about, but training with the daggers made me feel close to them.

One night after I returned to my room, I found a note on my pillow “Prudens Fallacia.” . I couldn’t believe my eyes and for a moment I thought I was dreaming. My mother, she used to teach me a little Latin every night since I was five.
Stunned and confused I stared at the note.
“Could it be? They must’ve faked it, but – why?” I couldn’t wrap my mind around this little note, so I decided it would be best to try to get some sleep and kind of ignore it for now. I would look at it tomorrow again.

To be continued…

About Strange Chambers:

This story has its origins in a dream I had a few weeks ago. I really liked the story, even though I woke up too early, leaving the story unfinished.
I thought trying to write a little short story series about this dream and trying to complete it would be a perfect way to practice my story writing skills and flex that creative muscle a little bit. I’m still in the process of learning and improving my story writing, so I hope this is not too boring and dull for anyone to read and that I at least managed to build a little suspense.

Any tips on story writing are greatly appreciated.

See you soon,

prospermind.

    • Haha. (Well me, too!) I choose French instead of Latin in my High School days.. 😀
Oh, nice!! I’m already very happy that I could pique someone’s interest with this then.
I can’t wait to continue either, I have a rough idea where the story will be heading, however I’m gonna be just winging it for the most part. 😀

    • Whoops! I’m sorry I didn’t reply sooner, I must’ve missed the notification of your comment. 😛

Many many thanks MM! Having read all three parts of your latest dark story, I feel very honoured to hear you say so.
I must say, it’s very exciting to write and when I do so, I forget all about the rules of writing short stories. Not ideal, but as long as it’s telling the story I envision, I’m happy. I’m still quite new at writing stories and I can only get better. 😉

      • Yes, I can only agree with you.
I haven’t stopped by in a while, but in case you’re still on holiday in France, I hope you’re enjoying yourself and the weather is nice down there.
I can only dream of the delightful smell of lavender and fresh air here in Shanghai. Be well! 🙂

Yes, me, too! I’m already working on part two. It’s quite exciting! 😉
Dreams are powerful and I think to write about them is a great way to practice writing and nourish your creativity. Keep doing it, you never know what crazy story you might dream of next. So be prepared and always keep paper and pen near! 🙂
